documenta 12 magazines
Introduction
How does documenta gain access to specific knowledge in the world? And how can it communicate this knowledge?

One possible approach was found with documenta 12 magazines: around 90 publications with different formats, orientations, and focuses, art, culture, and theory media from around the world, were invited 18 months ago to think together about the motifs and themes of documenta 12. They made the exhibition's guiding questions their own, discussing them at editorial level and passing them on to writers and artists.

In the intervening period, this has generated over 300 articles, essays, interviews, commentaries, and illustrated essays. It has also created a space for exchange, debate, controversy, and translation-a many-layered 2communication process that throws up a great deal of dust and things we can use for the exhibition," as Roger M. Buergel puts it, "themes or priorities that were lying dormant and which we had not reckoned with."

The material generated by the three issues leading up to the exhibition - Modernity?, Life!, and Education: - is intended to act as a navigation aid for readers and visitors to documenta 12.

documenta 12 magazines will continue to perform this function during the exhibition itself (in a separate section of the exhibition, a web journal, and a series of discussions and presentations).

Project
documenta 12 magazines works together with around 90 print and online periodicals throughout the world. These journals and magazines discuss the main themes and theories behind documenta 12 with particular emphasis being placed on reflecting the interests and specific knowledge of the respective local contexts entering into a dialogue with documenta 12. These debates are being compiled and published in a series of publications. This "journal of journals", so to speak, represents a forum for the contemporary aesthetic discourse. This platform in turn also forms part of the documenta 12 exhibition in Kassel.

Background and Context
Art magazines and journals represent a central interface between the production, discussion and criticism of art. Various positions taken in the discourse are developed here and subjected to ongoing discussion. These periodicals thus play an important role in translating such positions into terms that can be understood and made use of by either a specific audience or a broader public. The journal, and more specifically the art and culture journal, is a medium uniquely devoted to reflecting the relationships between art and theory and between art and the public, as well as dealing with the issues involved in artistic practice and theoretical work. With this project, the documenta 12 has entered into a dialogue with journals worldwide. The means by which this dialogue has taken place can be understood within the context of how it relates to local configurations and translocal intentions. Not the size of the medium is significant here, but rather its relevance. The project has therefore spreaded its activities among media of different sizes, ranging from micropublications in relatively uncommon languages to leading transnational media, with the aspiration of becoming a platform for the transfer and discursive consolidation of specialized knowledge.

Participants
Editors, critics, theorists and artists take part in transregional workshops and electronic working symposia in which the conceptual and theoretical leitmotifs of the various issues of documenta 12 magazines have been developed in the form of a dialogue. Each of the journals participating in the network has devoted an article or text, section or even an entire issue to one of the themes, utilizing various formats: interviews and essays, features and fiction. By virtue of the autonomous editorial departments participating in the project, the discourse have already been embedded in the local context and conveyed to the corresponding public. It is to be able to reach very specific audiences all over the world. This also ensures that disparate local and editorial approaches become discernible. The texts and contexts, as well as the discussions in the workshops and in the individual journals have formed the basic material used to put together the documenta 12 magazine. This material have been supplemented with pivotal texts on the concept and context of documenta 12. Each publication thus offers a general introduction to one of the core themes of documenta 12, providing a reader that addresses not only a specialist public, but the interested layperson as well. The three issues of the documenta 12 have been published by TASCHEN in German and English.

Objectives
Every response to a question, every theoretical debate, raises a whole series of further issues: What does cultural transmission mean? Where are the boundaries between theoretical assumptions and actual aesthetic practice? What form do discourses take in alleged centres as opposed to putative peripheral areas? Which shifts in thematic emphasis and changes in paradigm can be ascertained between various disciplines? How does the concept of artistic work differ from other kinds of work, if at all? How does artistic theory differ from practice, and from other kinds of texts, for example from literature and politics, etc.? documenta 12 magazines has opened up a lasting dialogue. The project is not about a theoretical self-appraisal carried out by documenta 12 itself, but rather about the process of developing theories and juxtaposing these with ideas currently circulating in the art discourse and among artists in the international, local or other specific contexts. The point of the project is thus not the role played by discourses in artistic practice, but instead the discursive practice itself, with its media, dialects and transformations in various contexts. Since the project is based in particular on transregional themes and motifs, it can help to elucidate the differences and similarities between local dimensions of aesthetic practice. With information being transmitted directly to particular scenes and editorial departments, it has been possible to involve precisely those persons and audiences around the world who are interested in the relevant issues in exhibition work. Another objective is to gain broader insights into present-day transformative processes: What kinds of mentalities have evolved in various regions? What kinds of discussions are taking place on the changes occurring in the various economic, social, intellectual and artistic milieus? Which impulses can be derived for the international discourse from these regional self-concepts?

Aims
An important aim of the network is to provide a broader forum in which authors, theorists and artists who work on the local implementation of discursive practices can expound on their experiences, and compare these experiences with those of people in other situations and contexts. The creation of long-term international cooperations and excellence networks beyond the scope of the project itself should provide inspiration and ideas for local and regional cultural milieus. The project will also endeavour to open up new channels for independent distribution networks, and to encourage flexible forms of translocal communication. Particularly interesting here will be the long-term effects of the project well beyond the period of documenta 12 itself, such as the development of sustainable information infrastructures, databases and other communication tools.
The Three Key Topics l

Is modernity our antiquity?
Many of the utopian projects of modernity have survived only as fragments and today appear 'unfinished'. Many of the material structures, forms and achievementswe associate with concepts of modernity seem to be disappearing amid present-day transformation processes. Yet at the same time, the real and conceptual spacesof modernity - its aesthetic and political structures and ideas - continue to be a major preoccupation of numerous projects taking place in the artistic realm and beyond, andalso give rise to conflicting projections. Is modernity our antiquity?

What is Bare Life? (subjectification)
At issue here is 'the subject': the exposed nature, powerlessness and defencelessness of the subject fuels many current philosophical and aesthetic debates. This is accompaniedby political considerations and artistic demands for a new self-empowerment of the subject. The forms of representation of such considerations, and questions related to thestatus of the subject in contemporary art, provide the thematic framework for this particular project topic.

Education. The local institution
The question of developing adequate forms of education and communication is one of the most fiercely debated issues in present-day society, not just in the art world. Accepted practices and established institutions are coming under increased pressure and currently find themselves in the midst of a crisis of definition. Newly founded institutions, however, often follow the example of these traditional models. In a parallel development, a wide range of new forms of organisation and self-organisation, new kinds of artistic andcommunications work have emerged - above all on a local level. Which of these local initiatives and action spaces are capable of securing the future of advanced, open andautonomous working practices and providing answers to the question of education they themselves represent?

The third issue of the Documenta 12 Magazine is dedicated to providing responses to these questions.

"Bare life" in relation to the twin iconography of terrorism and cloning

W. J. T. Mitchell (art historian and editor of Critical Inquiry/Chicago) from his current book in progress.
A talk about the convergence of two images of "bare life" in our time - the clone and the terrorist.
The first typifies the so called "biopictorial turn," in which the copying of "living images" crosses a threshold from the figurative to the literal, actual cloned organisms. The second exemplifies the contagious, viral character of the Imaginary in a time of terror.

Context
The first Living Newspaper originated in Soviet Russia around 1917 when Jacob Leby Moreno devised a medium to present daily news to the illiterate. Living Newspapers were improvisational and consisted of dramatizations of current events, social problems, and controversial issues, with appropriate suggestions for improvement. Teams of researchers-turned-playwrights clipped articles from newspapers about current events, often hot issues like farm policy, syphilis testing, and housing inequity. These newspaper clippings were adapted into plays intended to inform audiences, often with progressive or left wing themes. Although the undisguised political invective in the Living Newspapers sparked controversy, they also proved popular with audiences as an art form both in Soviet Russia, the US, and Germany.

For documenta 12 magazines, the concept of Living Newspaper can be seen as a response to Lenin's work "What is to be done?" in which Lenin speaks of the newspaper as a "collective organiser" intended to promote communication both across Soviet Russia and internationally. It will provide a backdrop to a series of events produced in collaboration with Natural Selection, Pulgar, Chimurenga, Metronome, and their collaborators.

Living Newspaper activities in Kassel:

1. Living Newspaper Public Notices and Pamphlets
Public Notices in different vernacular languages are posted along the main lines and streets of Kassel to announce the events of Living Newspaper. The collaborating magazines can design these public notices in their own style and language (English, German, French, Flemish, Spanish, Greek and Japanese), which will be cheaply reproduced in Kassel (A4), pasted up and handed out.

E.g.: Natural Selection will invite the public to contribute ideas to "Overcoming Self Loathing", Natural Selection's forthcoming pamphlet series of unsolicited advice.

E.g.: Extracts from Chimurenga - collaged into dialogues of sorts - promoting "House of Truth" evenings:
Lesego Rampolokeng: "I shit they eat I shit they eat then they shit and point and say: that's my shit!"
Fela Anikulapo Kuti: "Expensive Shit"

2. Living Newspaper Silent Symposium
Living Newspaper will offer a set of afternoon meetings enacted lying down, and conceived as a series of Silent Symposia. For 2-3 hours at a time, editors, collaborating artists, and members of the public will convene, remove their shoes and lie on mattresses. They will be provided with pencil and paper, and asked to turn off their mobile phones and skype links. Placed all around the mattresses will be A4 sheets with statements, questions, drawings and short texts in several languages prepared by the editorial offices of Living Newspaper (Pulgar, Chimurenga, Metronome, Natural Selection). Participants will be asked not to confer verbally, but to write down or draw their comments and circulate these to others. To provide help with ambience, seating, and to encourage response, Living Newspaper will provide an Agency for Interfaculty built up from the collaborators of Metronome and the other participating magazines. If possible, a further Living Newspaper will be produced on site out of the photocopied notes and drawings collated by each participant.

3. Charles Darwin Memorial Dart Competition
As a finale to the Silent Symposium, Natural Selection will supervise a collective throw of paper darts across the high-density discursive space of the Halle and award a mystery prize to the thrower of the dart with the most spectacular trajectory. Visitors will be asked to assemble their darts as a craft project before the toss, a measure which should thwart any cheats with intentions to throw a pre-assembled dart with unannounced and illegal enhancements.

Natural Selection also recommends measures to ensure that printed matter that is no longer required at the site is efficiently recycled. While not knowing how this might be achieved, they will be actively pestering people to advance this agenda.

4. Living Newspaper presents Chimurenga's House of Truth
The name "House of Truth" is borrowed from a drinking pit in the old Kofifi where the makers of the infamous Drum magazine gathered nightly for informal seminars with Can Themba as resident deconstructor. At the House of Truth, fluids, bodies and burning minds mix freely. With Ntone Edjabe of Chimurenga as Guest DJ in Kassel.

5. Living Newspaper: Hawking
A further function of the agents of Living Newspaper will be hawking. Each participating magazine in Living Newspaper will be invited to prepare an intervention that emphasizes the informality and performative nature of knowledge transfer, panning out into a public service, invisible to most, but with the generosity and ambiguity of an unofficial economy.

E.g., Metronome's Future Academy is a hawking academy, built from itinerants, people who are ready to speak to visitors through several vernaculars, draw them towards the d12 magazines project, and provide various services. These include Migakikko, a car-polishing service run by Japanese artists Takayuki Yamamoto, Kaori Sawamura, and Naohiro Deguchi conceived as an educational faculty that remains casual both aesthetically and economically.

E.g., Natural Selection's offers their Free PhD Service for strung out academics and cultural workers, awarding doctoral status and a final graduation ceremony in Kassel to interested parties working in the field of aesthetics. Whilst this service is available online, the Natural Selection board of examiners (Dr. Dan Arps, Dr. David Hatcher and Dr. Warren Olds) will be present in Kassel over this period to perform on the spot accreditations. The external observer, Dr. Deliss, will monitor the integrity of this procedure.

Further Hawking concepts and activities will be proposed and produced by the other magazines involved in Living Newspaper.

6. Living Newspaper Lunchtime Lectures
A series of lunchtime lectures to be given by the editors and collaborators of Metronome, Natural Selection, Pulgar, and Chimurenga. Speakers and times to be announced.

Key ideas:
The role of magazines as art mediators. How are artistic contexts represented in magazines?

What is the place of a magazine, its function within a specific context, the "local", "global" or "trans-regional"? Given the double role of many of the editors involved as curators and editors, one could reflect on the different modes of art mediation, the capacities and limitations of the medium magazine and the exhibition, as well as on similar strategies engaged in both contexts.

Different forms of collective on- and offline publishing in relation to critical art practices will be the backbone of this seminar insofar as it takes the journal, blog, mailing list or magazine as an object of a specific communication with different methodologies, metalanguages and tools which history has constructed to approach the publishing process. How do different formats of publishing operate in the field of art? How did electronic networks affect personal publishing and vice versa? How can artists rework these relations in a context of biased media? What kind of public do they create?

We invite contributions and work samples from artists and editors that especially explore the socio-political field of publishing and its different media when it comes to crucial points as: different forms of censorship in independent print and writing through online distribution licences, open content systems, forums, mailing lists and other mediated collective editing tools.

Description

1. Main Interests
- How does it work for a journal to be a generator of artistic and cultural production?

- Discussion on the project East - Dance - Academy (of Frakcija, Maska, Walking Theory) on education with/for arts

EDA - articulation of methodology:
reconstruction - demonstration - intervention. This will be an improvised and spontaneous part, but they are aware of the fact that the other mags are not part of the project and they want to use
that situation.

2. documenta Halle as working place:
- making a joint issue in a sketch/script format with all the magazines in the group and on the spot. (print on demand?)

-Another proposal that would require a collaboration with the documenta archive is that of the reconstruction of a catalogue or a magazine from the 60's.

- "THE WALL - visual arts in the age of Knauf" the title belongs to Emil Hrvatin is a proposal to find walls in the exhibition and to track their display history throughout the 12 documenta exhibitions... -

3. Performative format:
- "7 not so easy pieces" that will be developed for Kassel, consisting in small performances.

- Basic demonstrations of the works of the others - demonstration as an
education approach - discourse in performative format.

Lunch Lecture and Screening
24 of July from 13:00 on

"The Dead, The Absent And Fictitious" - a screening presented by LTTR.
This is our recognition of all things un-see-able. Is it in your mind, in your blood? Is it your dream or deep evil? Is it your grandma or your hero's unfinished last work? You paint wide with your camera and think big. The point is that it doesn't have to be new. Does it make sense? Or state the absence of it?

The theme for this workshop will be the constructions and delimitation of a specific figure; the speaking subject. How does this figure emerge through discourse, and what are its functions? What can be said and not said in order for a speaking subject to appear as real, as authentic, as authoritative and/or as truthful.

As well as taking a philosophical and political approach, this workshop will also attempt to integrate the exhibition, not as objects to be analyzed, but rather as propositions from which to depart: How are subjects positioned, and how is truth produced, and subsequently, staged? This could be a way to make the editors reflect on their own work in a performative and productive way rather than as merely observing and commenting. Or, to put it another way, what role as a speaking subjects is occupied through such an approach, and which are evacuated? What will a phrase such as 'the editor as producer' indicate, and how is this related to acts of reportage within art and within documenta 12? Obviously, the workshop will also discuss what these roles mean in our current moment of (permanent?) crisis in the public sphere during times of war.

Possible artistic positions to be discussed: Archivo Tucuman Arde,
Geyer/Hayes/Hunt/Sander/Thorne, Allan Sekula, Hito Steyerl, Zofia Kulik,
Dierk Schmidt, Sonia Abian and others.

A workshop on the politics of writing and editing, as well as of representation. As a part of the online discussion, the issue of political attachments and aims came up, or more specifically that some magazines had a political dimension that others either lacked or didn't share. The question is, however, what exactly constitutes such a political dimension, how and when is a magazine political?

It is a matter of content or subject matter, a matter of the manner of writing, of intentionality and/or alignment? Remembering Walter Benjamin's famous phrase about an art work with the correct political tendency also having to be the formally most invented, can the same be said of writing? How is writing a test of politics, as Claude Lefort has suggested? Can it be seen in the scope of the magazine, not only how it deals with the world and world issues, but also in the world it creates, the horizon it delimits? Or, shall we find the politics of the magazine not only its writing and editing, but also in its dissemination and distribution? That is, in another way, its format, but also its alignment with social movements, a political ideology, or a geopolitical space: What, how and for whom? (as well as, maybe, 'What is to be done?'...)

And, finally, how does this relate to artistic production and the distribution of the sensible; in a focus on artists whose methods and aims are aligned with the magazines (and vice versa), or in a critical position against certain practices and positions? Or, perhaps in a mix between the two, between the descriptive and prescriptive?
